Dr. Gelb Discusses Jackson's Arrest
November 21, 2003

This morning Dr. Gelb was interviewed on the Channel 2 Morning News (Fox TV, KHON) about the effect on families of Michael Jackson's arrest yesterday for possible child molestation. Discussion included why parents allow their children to visit Mr. Jackson's Neverland, what part the celebrity aspect may play in this, and the balance between supervising children and stifling them.
Dr. Gelb suggests one reason parents allow their children to visit Neverland is so that they can be in the presence of this celebrity The problem, however, points to negligent supervision. Regardless of Jackson's innocence or guilt, parents must always supervise their children and never leave them with a stranger.
Dr. Gelb believes Mr. Jackson's "king of pop" status could be factoring in the current events. The superstar is very wealthy; some resent his success; others are bothered by his eccentricities.
Dr. Gelb emphasizes the importance of supervision for guiding children to safe learning experiences; they are curious and must be directed. |
